Adelaide based Eire Pies were recently judged as some of the best Artisan Pies in the country at the “Australia’s Best Pie Competition” held in Melbourne earlier this month.
The competition was a part of the Food Service Australia 2015 trade show, staged in Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building and received over 600 entries from Australia’s best pie makers.
The Eire Vegan Chickpea and Lentil Pie won a silver medal (the highest award given in the category) and the Eire Steak and Potato Pie won Bronze.
Eire Pies’ home base is the Eire Café in the Adelaide suburb of Clapham, a gourmet food destination owned and run by partners Stephen Lowery and Zoi Kokoti.
Eire Café Executive Chef and co- owner Stephen Lowery said “ Coming home from the trade show with medals was a great thrill, particularly given that our pies were up against so many other gourmet pies from all across the country.”
Eire artisan pies were added to the Eire Café menu when a disgruntled customer berated Stephen for not stocking pies in the then newly opened café. “I literally told the agitated customer to come back tomorrow and I’ll make him a pie by hand. I did and he came back and has been coming back ever since. The smile on his face inspired me to create a range of handmade pies which have now become our best sellers”.
Stephen and Zoi were attending the Food Service Food Fair to show off their Eire Pies to potential customers thereby broadening their already growing distribution. Eire Pies can be found in specially selected Foodland stores throughout the Adelaide metropolitan area as well as in the Eire Café itself.
The medal wins are a further sign of recognition for Stephen and Zoi after their win in the 2014 Telstra Business Awards where Eire Café won the award for best start up business.
